  • Mallorca, MICE destination: a safe bet for the present and the future (and II)

A few weeks ago Mallorca hosted the Friends Gathering 2015 of the Travel Advisors Guild, one of the most important events of Spain's business trip sector. We had the privilege of participating in the organization of the event, thanks to which we could show the main prescribers of the sector that we know what we are talking about when we say: "Indeed, Mallorca is a perfect MICE destination."

In a previous post we told you about the support Mallorca receives in order to turn into a business destination, both from the public and privet sectors. Today, in this second part, we will prove with examples that we speak knowingly.

    May well-prepared hotels

The hotel that hosted this multitudinous event was the Meliá Palas Atenea, a recently renovated 4-star hotel that counts with a complete infrastructure for events and meetings. That's where we stayed during the Event, where we celebrated one of the association's yearly ordinary assemblies and where we enjoyed our first networking breakfast, a luxurious finger food we relished on the terrace of the hotel, with views of the Bay of Palma and of the Cathedral of Mallorca. October 21, outdoors and with splendid weather. That is Mallorca.

Palma, a city full of life

While the assembly took place in the hotel, the associates' companions enjoyed a tour through the emblematic patios ("courtyards") of Palma, directed by an official guide of the city hall. The participants soaked in the history of the city's mythical patios and they visited some of the most spectacular examples, such as the Estudi General Lul·luià and Can Oms.

    S'Aljub, a different multipurpose hall

In the afternoon we had a plenary session that focused on "The Digital Transformation." The session took place in the s'Aljub hall of Es Baluard, Palma's museum of contemporary art. S'Aljub is an impressive hall that used to be used for storing water in days of old; a spectacular place for all kinds of events, from conferences to tastings, and even concerts and projections. After the two talks that were foreseen for the session, the friends of TAG had a surprise prepared for us: a musical game in teams! Without a shadow of a doubt, an excellent and fun idea to encourage teamwork, trust and compromise, all of which are fundamental values of the association.

Gala dinner in a spectacular sea cave

The first day ended with a dinner in the Galdent restaurant. This was, perhaps, one of the most special moments of the Gathering. This was in part thanks to the uniqueness of this restaurant, built in an ancient sea cave, which makes it a matchless place on the island. Here all sorts of events can be organized for groups of anything between 100 and 4,000 people. The restaurant counts with different spaces and the immensity of some of the halls left our friends gobsmacked.

Day 2: team building in the heart of nature

We began the second day of the gathering with 25 cars picking up the assistants at the door of the hotel. You can't imagine how surprised they were to see 5 Land Rovers and 10 Jeep Wranglers! We carried out the activity in two groups: those that rode in the Land Rovers and Jeeps went into the Galatzó Reserve, a natural park of "attractions" in the middle of the forest, where they performed a series of off-road activities in which emotions and fun ran high. Simultaneously, the rest of the group went along an alternative route through the wonderful Tramuntana mountain range.

Later we all met up in the Es Ratxó Hotel, an old hotel, closed nowadays, located in the heart of the forest. There we found a small picnic waiting for us with some coca de trampó (a typical Mallorcan salty pastry) and drinks for regaining our energy. After this break, we swapped our "rides and adventures." What an adrenaline rush! After finishing the activity, we all met up again for a second snack, this time in the Granja de Esporles ("Esporles Farm"), another wonderful enclave in which to organize all sorts of events.

Outdoor breakfast in the Tramuntana mountain range

After our visit to the Granja de Esporles, we headed off towards our last destination: the lookout point of "na Foradada", one of our favorite locations in Mallorca, from which you can see one of the island's best sunsets. There, one last surprise awaited the gathering: the visit to the spectacular Son Marroig estate, a typical Mallorcan "possession" in which we were delighted with an aperitif and a curious Mallorcan herb workshop in which the assistants learnt to prepare the typical Mallorcan liqueur. Everyone took a bottle they had made themselves as a souvenir.

And what better way to end the Gathering than with a delicious paella prepared in situ on the terrace of Son Marroig? Well, just that. And, because Mallorca is Mallorca, the sun couldn't be missing. As if it were all orchestrated, it decided to appear just as we sat down to eat and it stayed with us throughout the whole meal ;)
